A courtyard off Mateevici

A former print works behind number 84, ten minutes on foot from Valea Morilor lake. Two halls, a kit room, a grading suite and a kitchen.

Hall A, the cyclorama

The room for products, catalogue, dance and anything that needs a clean horizon.

The cove is a single curved wall and floor, 11.4 metres wide and 8.2 deep, under a 5.1-metre ceiling with a lighting grid. It is white by default; we repaint to any colour with two days' notice and charge only the paint.

Blackout takes about two minutes. Power is three-phase with 63 amps per side, enough for the big tungsten units we keep for film. A car fits through the double doors with a hand's width to spare, which we measured with a Dacia Logan and a nervous client.

Hall B, the window room

Upstairs, where the print works kept its offices. Most of our portraits are made here.

Three arched windows face south-west over the courtyard and the roofs running down to Valea Morilor. The parquet is original oak, the brick is painted white, and one wall is lime plaster in a warm grey that photographs as skin-friendly as anything we have tried.

Window light is the reason to book it, so book by the hour. In October the sun reaches the floor at about 14:00 and leaves at 16:50. In December it arrives at 12:30 and is gone by 15:40. In June we hang linen at noon and shoot soft all afternoon. The freight lift takes a sofa.
